Another Dancing Arrangement

Picture
Picture
I had expected a call from a returning client Valerie requesting her yearly order for her daughter's final dance recital, and I got it.  She loves Birds of Paradise and so do I. She requested the Birds and pictured above is what we created for her.  Thanks again Valerie and we'll see you next time.

Our Exclusive Invite - 5-Star Prestige Ocean Front Resort - Grand Opening

Picture
WoW!  Here's what I have to say.  I had an exclusive invite, along with my partner in crime, Linda Payne Of Designer Wedding Rentals to set up one of the most beautiful NEW venues here to Victorians for their Grand Opening Show.  The 5-Star Prestige Hotel located in Sooke, BC is absolutely Stunning.  Linda and I set up the ballroom with beautiful satin, crystal bling and outstanding floral design. We had a blast hanging out with the Prestige, the locals and our very own local celebrities from The Zone!  We even got them to take a few pictures with us!  Krista, the event coordinator did an amazing job planning the show and they are already receiving bookings for wedding events well into next year.  Congratulations PRESTIGE!  We look forward to seeing you soon and working with all your new clientele and thank you!  And, once again, thank you to the talented Nichole Taylor for the amazing photographs.

Congratulations Cindy, Our Door Prize Winner!

Dabbling into Ikebana

Picture
Happening more often - I have requests for Ikebana floral design which is traditional Japanese floral art form.  Unlike American floral design, Ikebana is a structured/disciplined art usually consisting not only of blooms, but also gives emphasis to branches, thorns, and foliage uniting nature and humanity.  Ikebana is based on creating a scalene triangle and usually only consists of two or 3 different elements.  So as I dabble more and more into this amazing art form, I am learning more and more about the meaning behind its origins.  It was interesting to read that while creating a Ikebana, you must be quite and it's a moment to reflect and appreciate the nature world.  A time to step out of busy schedules.  It's funny, when I create anyone of my pieces, I always remain silent.  I focus on what I am trying to accomplish.  How I want the colour stories to flow, how the harmony will be created.  But what I enjoy the most, is that when I am creating it is a time to step out of reality and be creative, to express myself and my clients.  I am just so pleased to be able to do what I love to do for a living!  But before this blog becomes a four page essay, I'll tell you, I have the opportunity to create an Ikebana design for a wonderful interior designer, Angelique Bulosan of Imago Design who is currently wrapping up an interior space created for one of her clients with an Asian flare.  We're excited to be part of the finishing details.

It's a Spring Thing Show - Ramada Hotel

Picture
Picture
We were asked to participate in "It's a Spring Thing" show located at the Ramada Hotel on Gorge Rd, Victoria, British Columbia this past Sunday.  We made a large display using sweet lilac.  Our table smelt absolutely divine, everyone enjoyed coming over to smell them.  We had a blast and it was our first time we had a chance to use our new display posters created by Graphic FX.  Yet another great job Mike!  Thank you.

From our Garden

Picture
I had a dear friend stop by this weekend!  Pleasant surprise.  She noticed our lilac bush, so fragrant and beautiful and had asked if she could take home a few blooms.  I opted to walk around the garden and make a sweet smelling bouquet including lilac, lily of the valley, fern, blue bells and dusty miller.  Enjoy Leah!  Come by again!

More Orchids!

Varieties of orchids have filled our studio space lately.  Pictured above features dendrobium orchids in purple surrounded by salal and bear grass.

Another 4-Cats Delivery

Picture
Picture
I haven't been taking photographs of our weekly corporate accounts, I should try a bit harder to remember to do so.  Here's one we sent out this Friday to the 4-Cats art Studio in the Langford area.  I wanted it to be bright and inspirational for all the talented children there this week.

Up Close and Personal

Pictured above are more of our garden flowers, and of course snif proof (organically grown).... our bearded iris', allium and ranunculus' are in full bloom and we're loving every minute of it!  It's such a delight to sit outside and watch all these beauties Bloom, what a fabulous display of pure positive energy.

Week Two

The weeks seem to fly by... especially heading full force into the wedding season.  Our brides are getting excited and so are we.  We're also excited to send out our second travelling bouquet, we don't know where this one will land, but let's hope we get some feedback. Enjoy!

Our Travelling Bouquet

We've sent out our first "travelling" bouquet.  Every week, we'll be sending out 1 floral bouquet to whomever!  Today it landed at Ooh La La Cupcakes in Langford on Goldstream Ave.  With the bouquet sent out, we've asked to enjoy the bouquet for an hour and then pass it along to whomever.  Kind of cool.  As we dropped off our first bouquet, the store was packed with customers so I simply put it on the table, it was incredible.  The store owner looked so surprised and instantly had a big smile on her face, then the customers proceeded with wooo's and ahhh's...this is why we love what we do.  It's such an incredible feeling, putting joy into peoples lives. LOVE IT!  So who knows, maybe our travelling bouquet will end up in your hands one day!  I hope to find out where the bouquet ends up...we'll see...."The purpose of life is to discover your gift.  The meaning of life is giving your gift away." - David Viscott
PS...HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY! to all our hard working mothers, being a mother of 2, I know just how much work it really does take.  Put your feet up and relax!

We've had our first email back regarding our TRAVELLING BOUQUET, Sherryl from Ooh La La Cupcakes said ...." thank you for the beautiful travelling bouquet .... thanks so much for brightening our day!" ... SO COOL .. apparently it was delivered to Simply Gifted which is a fabulous gift shop!  I hope to hear about more locations.....!

Welcoming a New Baby Girl

Picture
We were asked by the Walker family (owners of Walker Hospitality) to help celebrate yet another arrival into their family.  This time it was a baby girl.  Shawna requested sunflowers and lilies along with including 2 heirloom items dating back to 1958.  Again, it was a blast! Thank you and all the best to the Walker family and CHEERS to the newest edition!

Colour Your Palette - Delta Ocean Pointe Resort and Spa

Picture
Picture
Fourteen chefs have drawn their “colour” (red, blue, yellow, purple, orange, green or black) and will present a savoury or sweet canapé at the 4th annual Colour Your Palette Event to raise funds for the artsREACH program which holds art workshops for lower income elementary children. This year, Eric Akis, Gary Hynes and Denise Marchessault will judge Best Tasting Canapé and Most Creative Colour/Food Inspiration. Event attendees also sample each of the entries and vote for the People’s Choice winner.  I was asked to "join" the BLUE team which was Delta Ocean Pointe's station.  I created a "blue" arrangement using blue hydrangea and larkspur with a unique etched glass blue vase.  I also incorporated white mini calla lilies and some tropical greenery, drift wood, poppy seed heads and it turned out amazing.  I wish I could have stayed to taste all the fabulous food!  Maybe next time.  GOOD LUCK ALL TEAMS, especially my friends at the Delta Ocean Pointe Resort and Spa, go BLUE team.

Finally, Finally.... Sunshine!

Thank you Mother Nature for today.  I was beginning to think it was never going to warm up.  After a corporate consultation earlier this morning, the rest of the day was dedicated to the garden. Finally, my seed starts can enjoy some outdoor weather.  My tulips and muscari are in bloom, the daffodils and hellebores are still in bloom after weeks.  The hyacinth are already starting to fade (a bit sad, they bring such a delightful smell as you walk by), my ranunculus are just beginning to show their first signs of buds (I cannot wait!).  Oh, yes how could I forget the blue bells that are just beginning to open, which are taking over my garden!  But I am mentally finding it hard to dig them out. My son and daughter helped plant my seed starts a few weeks back already, this is the first year we successfully planted our seeds indoors without anything tragic happening to them...as I recall, going back into time, the cat and dog knocked over the starts one year, the next Hayden ripped them all out with his tiny little baby fingers, another, yes its sad and hard for me to emit this, but I did kill them one year :(... BUT this year they are successful, well minus the few Alivia had pulled out, but we're still on track.  I've uploaded just a few pictures of my garden flowers to enjoy, or maybe be inspired by the colours for your bouquet.  Hopefully, throughout the flowering season, I'll be able to continue this trend and blog different growing times. Enjoy!

Spring Time Blooms

I think for all of us, Spring time is a very exciting time.  It's a time to wake-up, to clean-up and to get ready for summer.  I just love Spring.  My heart sings when I get to see the first bloom appear after a long resting season.  I enjoy going out to my flower garden and see my babies bloom.  I can't even express how happy it all makes me feel.  Now that we are living in Metchosin, British Columbia, it's even more exciting.  I get to see more wild flowers growing then living right in Langford.  I have to also laugh, originally being from Saskatchewan, I know they are still covered with piles of snow.  Oh Victoria, I knew I was meant to live here!  It's so much fun!  The spring time blooms are my favourite blooms and I get so excited when I get to call my suppliers an order bunches of tulips, daffodils, and my very favorite flower, the ranunculus.  Platinum Floral Designs recently participated in a very fashionable editorial shoot (which I will blog about shortly).  We created four stunning, high end and luxurious wedding bouquets and of course  I made a few with my ranunculus....after the shoot I got to take home my creations to enjoy in my home.  I could sit and watch a ranunculus open all day.  I actually spent the morning photographing them.  I am going to post a few so you can enjoy them too!  Oh and a picture of an Anemone...also one of my favourite blooms.....I could look at these pictures all day...but I have to go to work! It's ok, I need to make up an arrangement for a client who also shares love with ranunculus :)

4-Cats Art Studio

Picture
We've recently been asked by Gaylia, owner of 4-Cats Art Studio in Langford, British Columbia to bring by bi-weekly floral arrangements to adorn her art studio.  We're so excited for this one!  Not only can we express our selves in unique ways using bright and bold colour combinations, we'll be able to gather great inspiration from all the children's weekly art lining the walls in their studio and perhaps we'll find some new mediums to work with. We're always looking for new ideas. And, just in case you haven't been into a 4-Cats Art Studio before, you'll have to put it on your Victoria Bucket List of things to do.  4-Cats: a professional art studio catering to 3-15 year old artists in the making, taking inspiration from world famous artists teaching great life long skills.  We recently had a Pop Art party for my son, turning 4 and it was a blast!  Everyone really enjoyed the party and the friendly, professional staff.  We'll see you next week Gaylia and team!

It's a BOY!

Picture
Picture
Picture
I feel so honoured to be part of special moments in people's lives.  I was thrilled when I received a call from a very special client of mine, she said "It's a BOY!".  I gathered my material and worked with three requests, 1. orchids (the new mommy's favourite flower), 2. a beach theme to match her beach inspired home design and 3. to incorporate heirloom items (ceramic booties) dating back to 1958.  Such a blast to put this one together!

Floating Orchids

Picture
This arrangement ended up being just over 4 feet tall.  It featured white Dendrobium Orchids, Dusty Miller, curly willow, aspidistra leaves and lime green midollino sticks.  I would have posted an overall picture of this arrangement, but the pictures turned out so blurry.  Attached to the curly willow branches, I wired individual orchids to create a butterfly/floating effect.

Let's cheer you up!

Picture
Picture
The snow can sure put a damper on our Victorian spirit.  Being from Saskatchewan, I don't mind the snow, but as we all know it's not good for driving within the city.  I was called by a client to put together a "cheer me up" arrangement after a friend had a car accident.  Above is how it ended up.  I loved the look and I hope it helps her to lift her spirits.

Rose Pomandor designed for Designer Wedding & Special Occasion Rentals

Picture
We were asked by Linda Payne of Designer Wedding & Special Occasion Rentals to create a rose pomandor for one of her candlebras, which can now be rented for your special event.

Vanda Beauties

Picture
I was asked by a client to create a centerpiece for her daughter's 27th birthday.  She was very specific regarding her arrangement and said it needed to lay almost flat against the table.  So we created a "plate" of Vanda beauties!  It's a flower so spectacular, you really don't need anything more then just Vanda's.

Oak Bay Beach Hotel - Presentation Center

Picture

Picture
After our 2011 Sheraton Bridal Show, I had a few left over flowers to make a delivery to the Oak Bay Beach Hotel Presentation center.  I decided to make a very luxurious hydrangea ball and a garden inspired arrangement with the very beautiful purple anemone, one of my favourite flowers, although I do have a long list of favourite flowers.

Platinum Floral Designs helps Sharon Rai Hair and Make-up Artistry win "Best Decorated" Table at the O'Siem BC Spirit Festival

Picture
I was contacted by Sharon of Sharon Rai Hair and Make-Up Artistry to create a couple floral arrangements to help finish her table look at this years O'Siem Spirit Festival which took place at the Eagle Ridge Center in Langford, BC.  I said to Sharon, "I'll see what I can do!"  Seeing as it was such last minute and I had absolutely no fresh flowers on hand (all my orders are freshly ordered/event), I told her I'd step outside to my garden for some inspiration.  I walked outside and I looked at a bloomless field (other then the crocus') and thought, how was I going to pull this one together?  As I began to look a little harder, I was inspired by the moss growing on the rocks, the succulents full of life, silver dollars and unique greenery floating around.  I began to lift, pull and take different and unusual textures into my black bucket to put together into arrangements.  Who knew they were going to turn out so fabulous.  They were not your standard floral bouquet, nonetheless they worked.  It goes to show what a little inspiration, creativity and "looking just a bit further" will do.  Turns out Sharon's table won best decorated table at the event.  Congrats Sharon!

New Studio - Bigger and Better

Well, we did it! We're moved.  It was an incredible mission, but we have managed to finally move not only my studio, but my entire family too!  We are now located in beautiful Metchosin!  What a fabulous location and a huge inspiration!  I have been enjoying taking my children down to the magical beach only steps from our new home to watch all the wildlife!  So with this new move, our new studio, we will offer all the same great services as we always have, but now will have the opportunity to hold arrangement making workshops, which will be launching shortly!  Stay tuned!

Oak Bay Beach Hotel - Presentation Center

I am absolutely thrilled and honoured to present to you the 5- star luxury Oak Bay Beach Hotel which is slated to open March 2012.  I have met with the one of the owners, Shawna Walker and also Brian Hobson, GM.  We discussed floral design for the hotel, wedding and corporate events, very luxurious and exciting.  Everything about this hotel will only offer the best services to you, along with an unforgettable experience. I also had the pleasure of dropping off 2 floral arrangements which will be showcased for their presentation event happening tonight.  I used a white palette, including locally grown white stock, so vintage looking, mini cybidium orchids, garden roses, sweet william, tulips, mini gerbera's, pussy willow and curly willow for height.  Unfortunately, my camera is still in Vancouver, oh camera when will you return to me?  However, I managed to borrow and friends point and shoot, but it died right after I took one shot! Agh!  Anyways the arrangements turned out fabulous and I look forward to working with them in the future.  But for now experience the Oak Bay Beach Hotel through their website, especially if you are planning a 2012 Wedding!

Industrial Vs. Natural

What can I say!  I had spent an afternoon with Nichole of Nichole Taylor Photography in the bitter cold creating four floral arrangements which will be submitted into the International Floral Art Society.  I knew Nichole would do an outstanding job, but what I hadn't counted on was her ability to dig deep into my soul, pull it out and transfer it into the images.  It's like as if she had captured my heart and my passion for these pieces and literally painted it across all of her images.  She had sent so many pictures it was hard to decide which ones to post, but here are some of my favourites.  I'll post a few more later on.
Picture
I love how Nichole was able to capture through her lens beyond the scope of the arrangement.  The contrast between the concrete and the moss growing on the ground was another natural depiction of industrial VS natural which enhances the arrangement ten-fold.
Picture
I know we have all been struggling with our industrialization of this world and I too have been going through this.  I wanted to create a piece which would show case this struggle.  I created a globe out of wire to mimic the harsh reality of the industrialized world and wanted to show that no matter how far we go with our creations that the natural world will continue to fight for survival.  Here the struggle begins within the globe and fights to re-surface on the exterior, grasping to get a hold of this all.
Picture
Picture
This piece was completely improvised right on the spot.  Two weeks prior I had combed the beach with my children looking for the perfect spot and had found it!  I imagined how this piece was going to go!  However, the day I actually needed to begin the creative process, the ocean had literally swallowed the entire log ( I am not talking a small piece of wood, it was a large drifted tree), and almost the entire beach.  The ocean was mad, I had only a few choices and I gravitated towards the log pictured above and hoped for the best.  Not at all what I had imagined but I think it turned out just fine!
Here's a couple shots Nichole snapped as I was working!  Such fun!  It was also interesting to watch Nichole work.  She doesn't just point and shoot, she gets right down and dirty, literally!  She was at one point laying on the freezing cold sand just to get a shot.  I admire such a unique, hard working individual whose not afraid to do what needs to be done!  Thanks Nichole for a fabulous afternoon!

Christmas is Here!

Picture
Well Christmas is around the corner already! I know, I can't believe it either.  Christmas floral deliveries have begun, sadly I forgot my camera in Vancouver when we were visiting our new grandson!  So pictures will be sparse, but as I finished some arrangements today, I remembered my fourth love of my life (My iMac) has a built in camera, nice, I thought!  I snapped a few quick ones, it really doesn't do the arrangements their justice but here they are anyways!

It's True

Picture
I came across this phrase by Barry Dixon (an interior designer) and I just had to post it.  So true and rings right to my heart!

Tipsy-Turvy

Picture
I just re-discovered this picture of an arrangement I had made this spring and just had to post this picture.  Unfortunately, this piece never made it to it's final destination.  I was about to separate the two pieces when my darling husband knocked it over and smashed it into a million little pieces.  I remember being in a mad dash to create another piece for delivery.  Don't worry hun, I still love you!

Promotional Floral Piece

Picture
Picture
I was contacted by Sharon Rai of Sharon Rai Hair and Makeup Artistry to put together a floral arrangement for her table at Ladies Shopping Night held at the Oaklands Community Center.  I had so much fun incorporating her business colours into the arrangement and I cannot wait until I get my make over done by her, such a talented artist.  Her table linens were donated by none other then Linda Payne at Designer Wedding and Special Occasion Rentals.  Beautiful!

Floral Van Wrap

I finally had a wrap completed on our delivery van and I love it so much I just have to share it with you all.  It's so pretty in pink and I hope it'll catch your eye too.  My husband's swears never to drive it (He says, " Did it really have to be pink?"), but that's fine with me!  I had the opportunity to work with a very talented company, Graphic FX and they did a great jobs.  THANKS Mike R.!

Thanksgiving

Picture
Picture
Ah, Thanksgiving.  It's a time for me to remember the beauty of Fall and the beauty of family gatherings.  Right before Thanksgiving, I find myself missing summer and all it has to offer, and then Thanksgiving rolls around and again I am delighted at the beautiful colours, scents and themes that surround us!  I was busy making all my fall arrangements ordered and never got around to picturing many of them, but managed to squeeze a few in.  These arrangements were fun and traditional.  I stuck some sweet smelling cedar and parsley into theme to give off a nice aroma.

Flower Seminar

Picture
I was invited by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints to host a flower seminar in which I could share my skills on arranging simple hand-tied bouquets.  It was a blast AND this was my first time ever teaching so it was interesting to see how it was all going to come together.  I could have talked for hours but I had to limit myself at some point.  It was such great fun to share my passion of flowers and some basic care techniques and arranging tips with others who share passion in flowers as well.  I hope I was able to inspire a few, I think I succeeded as I had a lady come up to me after the seminar and she expressed her ideas for this years  Thanksgiving spread!  Love it!  They thanked me with a fabulous box of chocolates and the cutest card I have ever seen, pictured here with a bundle of flowers!
This arrangement was made for a lady who lives down the street from me.  It was a combination effort, she had brought some flowers from her garden, some from mine and we combined them to create a very garden-type arrangement.  I asked her if I could drop it off when I was finished, but she decided to watch me work and walked home with it!  She says she'll be back next week with some more fresh flowers to be arranged, hopefully I'll have some available from my garden again!  Thanks B.

Summer in the Flower Garden

Picture
I should have taken more pictures in the spring of our garden when our tulips, iris',daffodils and allium's were blooming, I regret not finding the time to do so as from spring to now, the look and blooms in the garden change greatly.  Almost every month, our garden looks completely different.  Right now we have dahlia's in a wide range of colour just beginning to bloom, sweet peas, cosmos, snap dragons, mums, hydrangea, daisies and roses blooming.  I am waiting to see how many carnation blooms I will get this year as I planted them right from seed.  August will bring a new depth of colour into the garden and I will hopefully be able to post some more pictures then.

New Project

I just had to post some pictures of my family on the beach at Esquimalt Lagoon collecting drift wood for our new project.  We are creating some unique table centerpieces out of driftwood.  I managed to convince my son and daughter to do some labour while playing at the beach. Well I guess I should say, Alivia (my daughter) tired to eat the sand all day and Hayden, well I captured his attention for a few minutes untill he saw the kids down the way constructing a drift wood fort, hence to say I lost his attention as that is right up his alley, but we had a blast!

Tin Buckets

Picture
If you live in the Langford area, you might catch a glimpse of these country style million star babies breathe tins at locations such as Basilico Restaurant and Lounge.  They were fun to make as we created them finally in some summer sun outside in the gasebo!

We recently were contacted to put together 11 bouquets for a dance recital in Sidney, BC to be given to the instructors.  We also were asked to put something unique together for one of the very talented young dancers and here are the results.

African Themed Cake for A Retiring Principal

Picture
This project started with one idea and ended in another.  We went from a three tiered cake to a cupcake stand with mini cupcakes (stand donated by Linda Payne of Designer Wedding Rentals and Special Events) and a floral piece to adorn the top.  The theme, African! Why?  The party was held for a retiring principal with a total of 250 guests whom dedicates much of her time raising funds for communities in South Africa.  Not only was this event for her retirement but doubled as a fundraiser to continue the fund raising for the African Communties.  The Ukrainian Culture Center was adorned with hand painted African Animals and they decorated the tables in African Print.  I decided to use Tiger lilies and bright yellow roses.  The tiger lilies where tied into the cupcakes as some of the cupcakes were in a tiger print.  The set up went fast and I was again happy to donate my time to this fundraising/retiring event.

Al's Birthday

Picture
Picture
We had a fabulous day celebrating a loved one's birthday this year.  I spent the night before creating and arranging a floral spread using my organic cut flower garden for inspiration, fresh fragrant lilac, blue blue bells, and colourful tulips were all pulled and used! What I couldn't grow I purchased and it was amazing to see our house come alive with the sweet scents and sweet arrangements throughout the house. I only wish I could have florals in my home on a daily basis like this, what a dream! Linens were provided by Linda Payne of Designer Wedding Rentals and Special Occasion Rentals.  Thanks Linda again!

Breast Cancer Awareness

Picture
Picture
Picture
Picture
I was asked by Linda Payne of Designer Wedding Rentals to create floral arrangements for the BC Breast Cancer Awareness event held at the Sheraton Hotel. Of course I said yes as I am an advocate for cancer awareness.  I kept everything low budget and spring themed.  Pink tulips were my top choice.  I created 3 different arrangements, all adorned with pink breast cancer ribbons.  I wanted the arrangements to have sex appeal, so I created "corset" ties in pink with black boudoir beads.  I also hand died white beans and floral beads pink to continue the theme.  25 arrangements were needed and it was fabulous to see the room come together with all the pink accents and floral arrangements.

Ah, the Christmas show.  This event will be memorable for me!  This was the kick off to the grand opening of Platinum Floral Designs.  I spent 2 very, I mean very full days with my assistants creating 40 plus floral masterpieces, which included a 4 foot tall Christmas tree completely built from scratch!  It was my largest piece to date, taking over 8 hours to complete.  The event was held at the Culis Market located in the Reflections Building on Veterans Memorial Parkway located in Langford for the BC Cancer "Inspire the World" Campaign to raise funds.  The event was a success.  It was very vigorous and I was glad to see it come to an end, however enjoyed seeing all the pieces on display and enjoyed the reactions of" passer-byers" (the ooowwhhers and aaaawwwwer's) as we delivered the Christmas Tree to Ric's Grill downtown Victoria.  Thanks to Aaron Miller who bid and won the tree.  And a very special thanks to Marian of Kenmar Flower Farms for supplying outstanding flowers for this event!
